A fire Tuesday at a University Place apartment complex displaced 19 people, West Pierce fire officials said.
All occupants at the Devonshire Apartments, 27th Street and Mountain View Drive West, were accounted for and that no one was hurt, officials said.
Eight adults and 11 children were displaced as a result of the fire. The Red Cross was helping the families.
Investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire.
Darla Smith and three of her kids escaped the apartment fire.
“I put them out in the car and for some split second I thought, ‘Oh, my son’s still sleeping in the living room’ so I ran back in there to make sure, then I remembered he was at his friend’s house,” Smith said. “So it was pretty hard.”
They were grateful to have escaped the flames that quickly spread from the roof of the apartments. The roof caved in on several units.
“Guess I’m going to have to start all over,” Smith said.
Neighbors knocked on doors about 7:15 a.m., telling residents, including Olivia Mason, to get her children out.
“I had to wake them up out of their sleep and we all just had to get out. It was pretty scary,” said Mason, carrying a small box with the only belongings she could get from inside her apartment before it was destroyed.
“We actually just got back into town from Illinois last night and this is what we woke up to this morning,” she said.
West Pierce firefighters had the fire under control in little more than an hour.
