What’s worse than jury duty?
Getting bilked out of $2,500 — probably.
Phone scammers have recently targeted citizens to tell them they owe fines for missing jury duty, according to Pierce County officials..
The scammers tell the victims the only way they can pay the fines is by buying a prepaid credit card, then call back and give the numbers on the card, the county said. One man who fell victim paid $2,500 to avoid what he thought were fines for failure to appear and contempt of court.
Pierce County only issues written summons for jury duty. Jury coordinators will not call residents, the county said in a release.
