Tacoma Public Schools will host its second annual Family & Community Learning Academy for families with students in kindergarten through eighth grade from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday April 18 at Jason Lee Middle School, 602 N. Sprague Ave.
There will be activities for kids organized by the YMCA and Metro Parks Tacoma, and workshops for parents.
Reading, Writing and Learning: Tips and tools to foster a love of reading in your child, along with information to help you know if your child is reading at grade level. This session will also show you how to create a literacy-rich environment at home.
Making it Count: How to help your child with math homework in the era of Common Core Standards. There will be take-home information and online resource to help you help your student.
On Track to College: This workshop will talk about what you can do to keep your child on track at each level, including elementary, middle, and high school.
What Kind of Smart is Your Child?: This workshop will discuss the theory of multiple intelligences. Learn how you can help your child maximize the area of intelligence that he or she is strongest in and strengthen weaker areas. If you have a child with special needs, the theory of multiple intelligences may be particularly helpful.
Latino Parent Empowerment - en Espanol: A Spanish-only session for Latino parents by Latino parents, designed to share helpful information and culturally responsive strategies to support your child’s learning at home.
High School 101: We asked high school students what they wished they would have known BEFORE they got to high school. They had plenty to share and this workshop is for parents and students who’d like to know more about the pitfalls and promise of high school for today’s students.
Winning in the World of Work: Do you have a winning resume? Are your interviewing skills on point? Are you dressed for success? This is the course you need to help you secure the confidence and the right stuff in the world of work.
Microsoft IT Academy-Building Your Professional Portfolio: Learn about online educational tools and resources available to support your student’s learning and your own.
