Workshop will focus on duties of school boards
South Sound residents interested in serving on their local school boards are invited to a free workshop at 6:30 p.m. April 22 at the Tacoma Central Administration Office, 601 S. Eighth St. Register online at http://bit.ly/1A56gI
The two-hour workshop is sponsored by the Washington State School Directors’ Association and will provide an overview of the roles and responsibilities of a school board member and how to file to become a candidate.
Positions are up for election this year on several Pierce County school boards, including two seats in Tacoma. Election filing week is May 12.
Bus tours will visit 7 area colleges
Tacoma Public Schools is sponsoring bus tours of area colleges for parents of students. Each of seven stops on the tour, which begin April 13, visits a different campus. Each visit includes a tour and presentation from college staff on the admissions process, financial aid, scholarships and college life at each school.

Buses will leave from the Central Administration Building at 601 S. Eighth St. at the times listed below. Parents can park in the building’s free parking lot.

Academy for students’ families scheduled
Tacoma Public Schools will host its second annual Family and Community Learning Academy for families with students in kindergarten through eighth grade from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday at Jason Lee Middle School, 602 N. Sprague Ave.
There will be activities and workshops on topics such as reading, writing, math and staying on track to college, and Latino parent empowerment. For more information, call 253-571-1087.
Registartion opens for Sumner summer camp
The Sumner School District Recreation Department is accepting registration for its Action Day Summer Camp. Each week of camp has a theme and will be held at two locations: Robert Miller Gym and Sumner Middle School.
Cost varies from $50-$127 per week and will be held June 18-Aug. 28. For more information call 253-891-6500.
Charles Wright student awarded scholarship
A South Sound student is among approximately 800 outstanding African-American high school seniors who have been awarded scholarships through the National Achievement Scholarship Program.
Benjamin Cary, a senior at Charles Wright Academy in Tacoma, will receive a $2,500 scholarship in a program funded by 30 corporate organizations and professional associations, and by National Merit Scholarship Corp. Cary, of Kent, plans to study computer engineering, according to a press release.
