Pierce County Surface Water Management Maintenance and Operations Manager Tony Fantello, stands next to three engineered logjams, part of phase one of the Needham Rd. setback flood control levy of around 800 ft. built along the rapidly aggrading Puyallup River south of Orting. The levy will protect residences along Needham Road while allowing the main stem of the Puyallup River to widen during flood events. The engineered log jams will protect the levy by absorbing and deflecting the energy of high velocity river flows during floods. Set back levies and engineered log jams are new tools the county will use, in addition to buying out property owners living in flood plains to manage flood risk in the future.
