A man who was convicted of molesting a child in Walla Walla County in 1995 and who has been held nearly two years at the Special Commitment Center on McNeil Island will be released Friday.

The state recently awarded $20.9 million for school facility energy-cost savings improvements to 40 school districts, and the Eatonville, Steilacoom and Sumner school districts were local recipients. To qualify, districts conducted audits of their schools that identified projects that would yield energy-cost savings while responding to facility needs. In most cases, state money is augmented with local dollars and funds from local utility providers.
Flames destroyed a Steilacoom home early today. The owner of the home at 74 Bonney Street noticed the fire and ran to a neighbors house, according the Steilacoom Department of Public Safety. They called 911 about 1:40 a.m.
The Pierce County Council has cleared the way for handing off Fort Steilacoom Park to the City of Lakewood by approving a three-year maintenance agreement. The county will pay Lakewood $50,000 a year to offset the city’s cost to maintain the regional park through 2014, when the county will terminate its lease agreement with the state. Lakewood would then negotiate a lease with the state, allowing the 340-acre property to become a true city park.
