Lonergan says he値l stay in race for Pierce County executive

Tacoma City Councilman Mike Lonergan has decided to continue his campaign for Pierce County executive despite failing to win the local Republican Party’s endorsement.

Lonergan said Friday he’s in “a far stronger position” as an independent candidate following last weekend’s Pierce County Republican Party convention, where he just missed getting enough votes to win the party’s endorsement. At the time, he said he was reconsidering his candidacy.

“Elections for assessor, auditor and sheriff are now nonpartisan, demonstrating that Pierce County citizens are ready to vote for the person, and not the party,” Lonergan said Friday. “Clearly, I offer far more successful experience as a chief executive officer than the other three candidates combined.”

The other candidates are two members of the Pierce County Council – Republican Shawn Bunney and Democrat Calvin Goings – and county Auditor Pat McCarthy.
