The Ruston Town Council postponed voting on a proposed gambling tax increase Monday, Mayor Michael Transue said. Council members plan to discuss the issue at a study session later this month, Transue said.
Councilman Wayne Stebner was pushing a proposal that would raise the town’s gambling tax from about 3 percent to the state maximum 20 percent. Stebner said a February report on the town’s finances shows a desperate need for new revenue.
The owner of Ruston’s only mini-casino said the increase would force him to shut down. Steve Fabre, owner of the Point Defiance Cafe & Casino, said he would bring a lawsuit if the ordinance passed.
