Two people were killed Monday when a sports car going at least 100 mph in the Puyallup area crashed, went airborne and landed next to a medical clinic that caught fire.
One man was thrown from the Nissan 350ZX and died. Another person died in the vehicle, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department reported. The victims’ names had not been released Monday evening.
The crash charred the outside of Summit View Clinic on Canyon Road East near 112th Street, but no medical records were lost, deputies reported. No one else was injured in the crash.
According to witnesses, the car was going at least 100 mph north on Canyon Road about 1:25 a.m. The driver tried to make a turn just north of 112th Street and lost control, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
The car slid sideways, leaving 191 feet of skid marks. It ran over a curb, flew through the air, and went over a concrete wall and then through a metal fence, Troyer said.
The car’s gas tank apparently was ripped open, and a fire ignited as the car flew through the air. The car was airborne for about 85 feet before it landed on its roof in the clinic’s driveway and set the building on fire.
The man who was thrown out of the car landed on a rock near the clinic, Troyer said. The other person was found badly burned in the car.
Investigators believe they have identified the two and were working to notify their families, Troyer said.
Investigators found a gun inside the car. No other information about the weapon was available. Investigators took measurements at the scene before removing the car, which was registered to a Parkland car lot.
It wasn’t immediately known whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident, Troyer said.
