Suspect released as police investigate Federal Way killing
Published: July 24th, 2008 01:00 AM | Updated: July 24th, 2008 05:54 AM
A 20-year-old Auburn man was released from jail Wednesday without being charged in a shooting Friday that left one man dead and another seriously wounded at a Federal Way apartment complex.

Federal Way police arrested the Auburn man Friday on investigation of first-degree murder. Dan Donohoe, spokesman for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, said more time is needed to investigate “all circumstances surrounding the incident.”

The Auburn man was released from the Regional Justice Center in Kent, but will remain a suspect in the case, Donohoe said. Prosecutors reached the 72-hour limit for holding him without filing charges and needed more time to make a decision, Donohoe said.

The News Tribune is not naming the man because he hasn’t been charged.

Donohoe said Federal Way police will continue to investigate.

Police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said the Auburn man remains the only suspect in the case, but police need to talk with additional witnesses.

Regarding the release, Schrock said, “It’s certainly not the outcome we would want, but it’s certainly something we can work with.”

In the incident, Vadim Grib, 19, died at the scene from a shotgun wound to his torso, the King County Medical Examiner’s Office reported.

A 22-year-old man also was shot and was in serious condition Friday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. An update on his condition was not available Wednesday. Neither victim lived in the apartment complex.

Witnesses told investigators a dispute broke out and the two victims were shot just before 1 a.m. Friday.

About 15 people had gathered in the parking lot of the Park at Dash Point Apartments at South 317th Street and 50th Lane Southwest.

Schrock said police still don’t know the exact reason for the dispute. She said there’s some indication Grib knew the suspect or the second victim.

Police found three guns at the crime scene, but haven’t determined to whom they belong.
