The U.S. Forest Service held two memorial services Friday at fire camps in Northern California for Fire Chief Dan Packer, who died last Saturday fighting a wildfire in Klamath National Forest.
Eight firefighters from East Pierce Fire & Rescue attended the services for their late chief.
A sunrise ceremony at the Orleans fire camp drew more than 1,000 firefighters, said Leona Rodreick, a Forest Service spokeswoman.
About 200 people attended a second ceremony, at sunset, at Happy Camp.
At the morning service, the Wildland Firefighter Association, which supports families of fallen wildland firefighters, presented the East Pierce contingent with a statue of a wildland fighter to be displayed in the station. Rodreick said the nearby Karuk Indian Tribe offered a prayer and a song for Packer at the ceremony.
Packer, 49, of Lake Tapps, was killed Saturday while scouting the wildfire in a steep part of Klamath National Forest when the blaze overran him.
Packer’s body was returned home Wednesday. His local memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday at Christian Faith Center in Federal Way.
Andrew Palmer, 18, who was based at Olympic National Park and died fighting another Northern California forest fire the day before Packer, also was honored at the services. Palmer’s local service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday in Port Townsend at Fort Worden State Park. Firefighters from East Pierce plan to attend.
