A 21-year-old man drove a stolen car at speeds of nearly 95 mph along Spanaway-area streets early Saturday before he crashed and tried to run away, according to court documents.
Deputies captured him and took him to the Pierce County Jail. On Monday, Pierce County prosecutors filed charges against Robert Spencer Rose.
Charging documents give the following account:
Deputies spotted a suspected stolen car driving in the 13800 block of Fourth Avenue East about 3:45 a.m. Saturday. After confirming that the car had been reported stolen, deputies began tailing the car, which was being driven at a high speed.
Deputies activated their emergency equipment and pursued the car at speeds of more than 90 mph.
A deputy put out spike strips in the 15200 block of Pacific Avenue in an attempt to stop the car. As the stolen car approached the strips at nearly 95 mph, the driver steered toward the deputy, who was seated in his patrol car, narrowly missing him.
After another 20 blocks, the driver failed to negotiate a U-turn and hit a retaining wall in the 17800 block of Pacific Avenue.
He got out of the car and ran. Deputies chased him and arrested him after a short pursuit.
Deputies identified Rose as the driver and asked him about the car.
“I’m not the one who stole it,” he said.
Deputies discovered that Rose was carrying a drug pipe and several shaved keys, which are ground-down keys designed to fool a car’s ignition system. Inside the car, they also found several pieces of stereo equipment that appeared to have been stolen.
Prosecutors have charged Rose with first-degree assault, attempting to elude a pursing police vehicle and unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle. He was being held in the Pierce County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.
