A sign asking drivers to not drink and drive was unveiled Tuesday morning at the spot where two young people were killed in 2006 by a drunken driver.
The sign dedication for Cassandra Clay and Shane Bender began at 10 a.m. at the crash site at the intersection of Highway 7 and 159th Street South. The dedication is part of the state Department of Transportation’s DUI Memorial Sign program. The Pierce County DUI Victims Panel – a group of families and police officers who talk with others about the dangerous and lethal consequences of drunken driving – will participate in the event.
Clay and Bender were passengers in a Mazda that was hit early Oct. 1, 2006, by a drunken driver.
The 36-year-old man ran a red light and hit the Mazda as it was making a left turn at Highway 7 and 159th Street. Clay and Bender, who were both 20, died at the scene.
Clevan Derrer of Tacoma later pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison.
His blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit of 0.08.
