Richard McKinley, currently the Bellingham Public Works director, will take over the same job for Tacoma early next year, city officials announced Thursday.

McKinley replaces Bill Pugh, Tacoma’s long-time public works director who retired earlier this year following a 33-year career with the city.

City Manager Eric Anderson chose McKinley following a nationwide search.

Mike Slevin has served as Tacoma’s interim public works director.

McKinley has also worked for the cities of Walla Walla and Springfield, Ore. His salary will start at $142,293, officials said.

He is scheduled to begin work Jan 5. in Tacoma.
