Fort Lewis and U.S. Army Cadet Command officials are investigating the death Thursday of an Army ROTC cadet who was participating in a night land navigation training exercise. Daniel N. Miller, 19, was reported missing at approximately 2 a.m. Thursday. A search in the area where the training occurred found his body about 9:15 a.m.
The cause and manner of death have not been officially determined, according to the Army Cadet Command in a statement.
Miller was a student at Houghton College and a member of the Army ROTC unit at St. Bonaventure University in St. Bonaventure, N.Y. He was at Fort Lewis for the Leader Development and Assessment Course, known as "Operation Warrior Forge." The training involves more than 5,000 cadets at the local Army post annually.
It is an important component of the Army ROTC curriculum and routinely occurs during the summer prior to each cadet's graduation from college. Cadet Command, the parent organization of the Army ROTC program, provides the majority of the commissioned officers who enter the U.S. Army each year. "The men and women of Cadet Command are deeply saddened by the death of Cadet Miller. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones," said Maj. Gen. Arthur M. Bartell, the commanding general of Cadet Command, which is headquartered at Fort Monroe, Va.
