The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department issued a warning Thursday about a toxic algae bloom in Spanaway Lake.
The bloom, identified by an unusual color in the water, is giving off toxic fumes that could make people ill. The Health Department recommends that people near the lake:
• Keep children and pets away from areas that have a heavy concentration of algae.
• Do not swim, wade or waterski in the lake.
• Do not boat or fish in areas that have a heavy concentration of algae.
Contact with the water can cause muscle weakness, vomiting, diarrhea and nausea. Anyone who has these symptoms should seek medical help, officials said.
