The first small shipments of swine flu vaccine began arriving in Pierce County on Friday and should be available from many medical providers early next week, according to the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.
The initial batch of 8,597 doses of the vaccine is in the form of nasal spray, said Eileen Finnegan, a Health Department spokeswoman.
Larger shipments of the injectable vaccine are expected to begin arriving in a few days, with new shipments weekly, Finnegan said.
The nasal spray can be given only to healthy children and adults between the ages of 2 and 49. Pregnant women should receive injectable H1N1 vaccine, not the spray, health officials say.
Pierce County is expected to receive about 550,000 doses of the vaccine. Most will go directly to medical providers and some pharmacies. The rest will go to the Health Department for distribution.
