Olympia: New policy allows collecting rainwater
Washington Ecology Director Jay Manning has signed a policy statement that says residents can collect and store rainwater for use on their property without a water-rights permit.
The new policy, signed Friday, clarifies how rainwater collection should be handled under state law. The decision is important to homebuilders and others who want to include rooftop or other water collection systems in their construction.
As part of the policy, the Ecology Department reserves the right to regulate such systems if they become so widely used that they could harm stream flows or existing water rights.
