PIERCE COUNTY: Thousands lose power in windstorm
The first high winds of the fall toppled trees and dropped tree limbs and power lines throughout Pierce County early Thursday evening, leaving at least 13,500 customers without power.
Tacoma Power reported 5,500 customers with scattered outages, including about 1,200 in University Place. Puget Sound Energy reported at least 8,000 customers without power, mostly in the greater Puyallup area.
The Tacoma Fire Department was extra busy after it took over for Pierce County Fire Communications in Lakewood, which handles 911 calls for a large part of the county. The 911 center lost its power about 6 p.m. Tacoma fire dispatchers relayed calls to the center.
