The Elma City Council still is dragging its feet on whether a drug-sniffing dog will be worth the cost, according to The Daily World of Aberdeen.
In August, Police Chief Jeff Troumbley applied for a grant of nearly $10,000 for a drug-locating dog. Some council members questioned the long-term costs.
The dog would live with an officer and accompany police officers to search locations or people where drugs might be.
The city was awarded the grant, which will cover the cost of outfitting one of the department’s vehicles to transport the animal, as well as other needs such as veterinarian check-ups. The grant expires in June.
Council members expressed worry again at a budget workshop last week about whether the city could absorb the cost after the grant runs out.
Troumbley would not disclose the estimated yearly cost of the dog after the grant money is spent. The yearly cost would include $2,500 for food and maintenance and a specialty pay increase. The City Council is expected to make a decision before its 2010 budget is adopted early next month.
