Drivers are advised to avoid construction that’s caused nighttime backups on Interstate 5 near Lakewood this week and is set to continue Thursday (Aug. 28).
Lane and ramp closures caused the backups Monday and Tuesday night, and are expected to continue through Thursday.
Two lanes of southbound I-5 were scheduled toclose near M Street Wednesday night while crews restriped the inside lanes, and built a construction zone in the median.
Lanes are slated to reopen by 5 a.m. Thursday.
That work was in preparation for a six-week closure of the left lane of the southbound freeway, between the Yakima Avenue bridge and state Route 16.
To allow paving between Gravelly Lake Drive and the Joint Base Lewis-McChord main gate, only one southbound lane was open overnight Wednesday.Those lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. Thursday. The same closure will happen between 8 p.m. Thursday and 5 a.m. Friday.
The left lane of southbound I-5 near Mounts Road will close from 8 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday, and the JBLM main gate on-ramp to the southbound freeway will shut down between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. The Mounts Road on-ramp will be out of commission from 1-4 a.m.
