Tuesday’s crash on Highway 507 involving a Fort Lewis Stryker vehicle was the first fatal collision the Army post has seen involving its flagship vehicle, officials said Wednesday.
Gregory G. Wood, 55, was killed when the 16-ton Stryker hit his 1998 Ford F-250 pickup on the civilian road, which cuts through the Army post. Wood was northbound when the Stryker turned onto the highway from Eighth Avenue South.
The Washington State Patrol said the apparent cause of the crash was the Stryker driver’s failure to yield to the pickup. None of the four soldiers in the Stryker was hurt.
Officials searched through records of the past seven years, since the armored vehicles first came to the base, and Tuesday’s crash was the first fatal accident, including exercises on post or at the Yakima training facility.
“When we think about the thousands of miles that have been traversed on and off post, Styker vehicles have a very excellent record when it comes to sharing roads with civilians,” Fort Lewis spokesman Joe Piek said. “But that doesn’t in any way diminish the tragic nature of this accident.”
The State Patrol investigation will be sent to Pierce County prosecutors, who will decide whether charges will be filed. Post officials also are investigating, as are officials sent from the Army’s Combat Readiness Center at Fort Rucker, Ala.
“We want to make sure something like this doesn’t happen in the future,” Piek said.
