The State of Washington has raised $608,000 in an auction of treasures left unclaimed in safe deposit boxes.
Bidders bought old money, gold coins, brass knuckles and false teeth. The more than 4,000 items auctioned Dec. 18 and 19 in Kenmore were left by their owners in safe deposit boxes at banks and credit unions throughout Washington.
About 500 people took part in the auction, either in person or online. Among the big sales were $16,000 for a set of 20 South African gold Kruggerand coins.
The money goes into the Department of Revenue’s unclaimed property fund. People who left items in the safe deposit boxes are still entitled to receive the money collected from the sale, if they prove they were the owners.
