A Tri-City motorcycle riding club wants the public's help Sunday in its quest to fill at least seven truckloads of toys for charity.
The annual Children's Toy Run will travel from West Richland to downtown Kennewick. People can watch the riders along the route and make donations at the end point to be given to kids during the holidays or those in crisis.
"Our wish is that no child in this community be without a gift for Christmas," said Lynette Patch, secretary of the Desert Thunder club.
The event has been held for 16 years, with motorcyclists coming from Yakima, Walla Walla and Wenatchee prepared to ride in all conditions.
This year the ride will benefit: Operation Thank You so soldiers can pass goodwill along to children they meet in the Middle East; Park Middle School for Santa's Workshop; Community Action Committee; and two Tri-City fire stations.
The donations also will go to the Sexual Assault Response Center, Safe Harbor Crisis Nursery and Domestic Violence Services of Benton & Franklin Counties.
Both riders and their passengers are asked to bring a new stuffed animal, toy or game. People who don't plan to ride can take a new, unwrapped toy to Kennewick's Full Throttle Motorcycle Accessories, 134 Vista Way, Suite E.
Checkerboard 4-H Club has joined in Desert Thunder's efforts by collecting toy donations around the Tri-Cities.
"Last year we had more than 350 motorcycles ride with us and ended up with more than six truckloads of toys, games and bicycles. We are looking forward to an even better year this time," Patch said.
"With this struggling economy, we realize the need is even greater this year and those in the position to help are less, but the hearts are still open to the need."
Sunday's event starts with a 10:30 a.m. social hour at Flat Top Park in West Richland. Coffee and pastries will be provided by the Christian Motorcycle Association.
The ride starts at 11:30 a.m. with the toy-adorned motorcycles making their way through south Richland and Kennewick to Full Throttle.
People can join the festivities at Full Throttle, where food will be provided by Desert Thunder and a 50-50 drawing will raise money for Operation Thank You.
