CommentsA Benton County dispatcher is being recognized today for helping direct a 911 caller on how to perform CPR on his wife after she stopped breathing.
Esther Duncan will receive the Richland City Manger's Medallion at 9 a.m. at the Benton County Emergency Operations Center. On Oct. 6, Duncan took a 911 call from a man requesting an ambulance because his wife wasn't breathing. An ambulance was sent to the home while Duncan talked the man through the CPR steps.
The caller, whose name was not released, credits Duncan with helping him save his wife.
"The dispatcher told me to give her two breaths and 30 chest compressions. She made me put the phone down and count out loud," he said. "My chest compressions were not fast enough and the dispatcher instructed me to do it faster."
The caller said once the ambulance arrived, he had to wait about 40 minutes while paramedics worked on his wife before he was told she had a pulse.
"The extensive training and experience of this dispatcher saved this woman's life," said Jim Barber, manager of the Southeast Communications Center.
