KENNEWICK -- As a central defender on Kamiakin's back line, Brianna Brannan doesn't get to spend too much time on the offensive end of the field.
But there she stood during a 1-1 tie in overtime, planted firmly inside Moses Lake's penalty area during a corner kick with the game on the line -- a human testament of will.
"I was like, 'God, please let me get a goal,' " Brannan said. "I wasn't leaving the box without one."
So when Kristyn Bohlander delivered a soft corner kick smack dab in front of the goal-- right outside the 6-yard box -- Brannan did the rest.
The senior released from her defender, leaped and headed the ball over Chiefs goalkeeper Bailey Ritchie to give the Braves a 2-1 victory in the 4A Eastern Regional playoffs Saturday at Lampson Stadium.
"Most times, you wait for the defender to jump first, but I wanted it," said Brannan, a senior who has drawn interest from Eastern Washington's women's program. Her sister, Whitney -- a former Braves player -- is a starting forward for the Eagles.
"(Brianna is) really good in the air," said Kamiakin coach Chris Erikson. "I told them they did three correct things to make that happen: Jori (Skorpik) forced the corner kick, Bo gave us a good service and Brianna was right on with the finish."
Kamiakin (16-1-1), which earned its first trip to state since 2006, got a goal from Emilee Meyer in the 22nd minute and controlled the tempo for most of the game. The Braves outshot the Chiefs 16-4 and forced 13 corner kicks.
But Moses Lake evened things up in the 65th minute after Magi Munoz launched a free kick from midfield that caught Kamiakin goalie Madi Meyer a bit off guard. The senior keeper was in traffic in front of the net and bobbled the ball, allowing freshman Hunter Mauseth to punch the ball into the net for the equalizer.
"I got hit and was going down. I was looking for a call," the senior keeper said.
The goal was unexpected and seemed to throw what seemed like a certain victory into question.
"When it went to overtime I thought, first they knocked out Eisenhower and now us," said Erikson of the upset-minded Chiefs (10-9), who eliminated the Cadets in a shootout Tuesday.
The Braves continued to draw inspiration from Erikson, who continues to coach despite being diagnosed with Diffuse B-cell lymphoma last summer. The team has been wearing yellow wrist bands which read 'Team Erikson' to help show their support.
"We want to give her the season she deserves," Brianna Brannan said. "I would be nothing without her."
