Two of Tacoma’s interim department heads will become permanent next week, the city manager’s office announced Monday.
City Manager T.C. Broadnax named Kurtis Kingsolver the city’s public works director and Peter Huffman the director of the city’s planning and development services department.
Kingsolver has been interim director since February. He started with the city in 1990 as a civil engineer, and has worked as the city’s traffic engineer and as city engineer. He’s worked on large projects, including the Murray Morgan Bridge, Pacific Avenue Streetscape, Stadium Way arterial improvement and Hylebos Bridge projects.
Public works is responsible for maintaining city-owned properties, roads, streetlights, parking services and many other operations.
Huffman, interim director of planning and development services for the past 11 months, started working for the city as an urban planner in 1996. He has led the effort to streamline the city’s land use code and the development of the city’s permit services enterprise fund. Huffman’s department is responsible for comprehensive land use planning, permitting for building and land use, and inspections.
Both will take their posts Monday.
