The Olympia oyster is now the official oyster of Washington state.
Gov. Jay Inslee signed Senate Bill 6145 on Friday, and it officially takes effect in mid-June. The ostrea lurida, commonly known as the Olympia oyster, is the only oyster native to Washington state.
Olympia oysters are small, flat oysters that are found in low tide areas, mudflats and gravel bars in estuaries and bays.
The bill, sponsored by Democratic Sen. Brian Hatfield of Raymond, was a school project of Claire Thompson, an eighth-grader at the Nova School in Olympia.
