New Washington state escalator rules fall short, analysis finds

Following an escalator collapse in Bellevue in December 2012, state officials established new rules governing elevator and escalator maintenance companies. But nearly a year after the new regulations took effect, roughly one quarter of the 503 escalators inspected by the state have outstanding problems, and state inspectors aren't checking escalators regularly.
