WARRENTON, Ore. – As I hiked the Fort to Sea Trail recently with my MP3 player dealing a mix of Jack Johnson and Queens of the Stone Age, my thoughts turned to Lewis and Clark.
The long-term vision of the new Lewis and Clark National and State Historical Parks has not gotten lost in hoopla for next week’s bicentennial events.
David Nicandri’s second-floor office in the Washington State History Museum is a corner space with plenty of seating and Pendleton accents.
When all the hoopla about the 200th anniversary of Lewis and Clark’s expedition began 10 years ago, there was talk of a national pilgrimage of tourists who would follow the explorers’ footsteps, wallets open and spreading dollars from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean.
The two dugout canoes belonging to the Discovery Expedition of St. Charles, Mo., had collected 4 inches of water overnight Friday.
If only the Astoria of 2005 had existed in 1805. The historic poll at Station Camp might have decided whether the Corps of Discovery wintered at the Holiday Inn or Comfort Suites. Meriwether Lewis could have cheered himself up at a local martini bar. Capt. William Clark could have picked up a spiffy new dog collar for Seaman at a downtown boutique.
