A Pierce County judge dismissed rape charges today against a man accused of assaulting a fellow jail inmate after DNA testing found no evidence the two had sexual contact.
Pierce County paid nearly four times the going rate to provide private defense attorneys for 31 men swept up in a crackdown on the Hilltop Crips street gang last year, according to a News Tribune analysis.
Last year’s sweep of the Hilltop Crips scooped up a sizable portion of Tacoma’s gang problem and dropped it squarely in the lap of the state Department of Corrections.

Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist held a news conference Tuesday to declare victory – at least by the measure of convictions and reduced gang violence in Tacoma.
Five men swept up in a 2010 crackdown on the Hilltop Crips street gang pleaded guilty to various crimes this week in Pierce County Superior Court.
