Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge:
Anchors: Crews on a barge south of the existing bridge are installing anchors that will be used to stabilize the new caissons. As of Friday, 51 of the 64 anchors had been installed.
Caissons: At the Port of Tacoma, crews are adding concrete walls to cutting edges, docked at Terminal 7. The first caisson, which will become the foundation for the tower on the Tacoma side of the bridge, is scheduled to be towed to the Narrows on July 21. The Gig Harbor side caisson will follow about a month later.
Roadwork: On the Gig Harbor side of the bridge, half of the new overpass at 24th Avenue Northwest is in place. The second half of the span will be hoisted into place this week.
Q: When will the new exit from westbound Highway 16 to 24th Avenue Northwest be finished? - A reader
A: The new exit will open at the same time the 24th overpass is finished, in mid-August. The on-ramp to Highway 16 from 24th will probably not be finished by then, however.
