Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows bridge:
The most noticeable action this week will take place in the toll plaza area, adjacent to eastbound lanes of Highway 16 on the Gig Harbor side of the Narrows.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, crews will use a crane to set canopy roof sections onto the steel columns erected in the toll plaza last month.
The roof eventually will cover six drive-through toll booths through which eastbound traffic will pass when the bridge is finished in April 2007.
On Thursday night and Friday morning, the right lane of westbound Highway 16 will be closed so crews can work on the new stormwater drainage system.
On both towers, crews will pour the initial section of the bottom cross strut that will connect the tower legs. The horizontal struts, supported by temporary steel bracing built up from the top of the caissons, are so massive they are being poured in sections. Pours will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Thursday and Friday, concrete crews will pour the 13th 17.5-foot section of tower legs on both towers.
One concrete pour is scheduled for Tuesday on the east anchorage. Rob Carson, The News Tribune
