My friend Pam and I had talked about going to Mount St. Helens and Spirit Lake ever since the mountain rumbled back to life in early March 1980. Earlier in her life she had spent a few years in Centralia and Chehalis and had gotten to know the surrounding area, including, Spirit Lake and Goat Rock.
