Question: Can just any boat make a drawbridge open, regardless of how much traffic there is? On the way to Port Townsend last weekend I got stuck for at least a half hour at the Hood Canal Bridge. Hundreds of cars were waiting on both sides and one dinky sailboat went through. Hardly seems fair.

Hundreds of cars were waiting on both sides and one dinky sailboat went through. Hardly seems fair. Answer: Rules on marine openings are different for different bridges, but at the Hood Canal Bridge, there currently are no restrictions on marine traffic. That mean boats can pretty much go through whenever they want — as long as they give bridge tenders an hour’s notice.

Question: If you’re in a lane that’s specifically marked for left turns only and is controlled by a green arrow, do you still have to use your turn signal? It seems pretty obvious that you’re turning. Where else would you go? Answer: If you want to be perfectly legal, you’re still going to have to signal. Washington law doesn’t make exceptions for such mandatory turning situations.

Question: I know it’s irrational, but every time I drive across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge I get this fear that I’m going to go over the edge and end up in the water. If your car does crash in the water, what are you supposed to do?

Question: I see a variety of license plate covers and sprays for sale that are supposed to make license plates unreadable by toll cameras. Do any of them work? Are they illegal? I’m thinking in particular about the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. – Ryan, Gig Harbor

Question: OK, say you’re on a two-lane highway with fog lines and wide, paved shoulders. The guy ahead of you stops in the middle of the road to make a left turn. Traffic is heavy, and a line of cars builds up behind him. Is it OK to go around him on the right, as long as it’s paved? Or do you have to sit there and wait? – James, Tacoma

Question: Why do they have lanes closed on state Route 16 in Gig Harbor at Olympic Drive? Traffic was so slow Friday at rush hour, it was like the old days when there was just one bridge.

What is going on with the Hylebos Bridge? It seems to be repaired as I have seen it in both the open and closed positions, but the road is still barricaded.

Question: Is it OK to watch television while you drive? I commute home at night and see TVs all the time — especially in SUVs. The other night I was following a guy watching fights on a drop-down screen. This seems like insanity to me.
