Victim profiles: Four train incidents, five dead

Here are five of the 54 people who were killed by trains in the South Sound:

1. Jaime Hammontree, 15
Date: Nov. 15, 1998
Location: Trestle over the White River near Skinner Road
City: Pacific
Tracks: BNSF
Operating company: Amtrak
Cause of death: Accident
Details: The Auburn-Riverside High School student was walking to a friend's house and took a shortcut across the trestle. She ran from the oncoming train but was struck at the northern end of the trestle.

2. Wallace Colby, 89
Date: Jan. 10, 2004
Location: 12th Street Northwest and West Stewart Avenue
City: Puyallup
Tracks: BNSF
Operating company: Amtrak
Cause of death: Accident
Details: The Puyallup man, known for walking around the city and waving to police, was walking northbound on 12th Street Northwest when he was hit by the train about 8:30 a.m. Witnesses told police his head was down and that he might not have seen the train coming.

3. Rosemary Dye, 51
Date: May 8, 2008
Location: Ruston tunnel
City: Ruston
Tracks: BNSF
Operating company: BNSF
Cause of death: Unknown
Details: Dye was struck about 6 p.m., according to BNSF officials. Her body was reportedly found inside the tunnel three hours later. Authorities have yet to determine why she was on the tracks. Dye's family say she was addicted to methamphetamine and was homeless after a promising previous career as a pilot for United Parcel Service.

4. Andrew Cao, 17, and Dan Mattlab, 16
Date: Nov. 20, 2005
Location: Sunset Beach area, 4600 block of Memory Lane
City: University Place
Tracks: BNSF
Operating company: Union Pacific
Cause of death: Accident
Details: The University Place teenagers were apparently walking on the tracks with their backs to the train, according to authorities. Police found a portable stereo nearby. It wasn't quite dark when the Curtis High School students were hit, but the fog and nearby tree cover darkened the area. One official says the two boys might have never seen the train coming.
