In University Place: Pierce County’s Chambers Creek Properties project included opening two miles of beach next to the BNSF tracks. Negotiations with the railroad led to a plan for a $3.5 million overpass and two miles of fencing on each side of the tracks. Construction is about to begin and the beach and the overpass will be open in 2010.
In the Summit area: Ford Middle School is located along the little-used Tacoma Rail tracks. State rail authorities are working with the Franklin Pierce School District to install a fence to keep students from hanging out near the tracks.
In Kent: The city is wrapping up work on its Kent Events Center, which will be home to the Thunderbirds pro hockey team. City planners are designing a pedestrian crossing over the Union Pacific tracks next door.
