Meet Margaret Hoang, a 15-year-old doll clothing crafter from Edgewood who makes Barbie versions of famous characters from literature like Sherlock Holmes and Jane Eyre. Her work is on display at the Sumner Library until the end of March.

About Hoang

School: Home-schooled.

Family: Father, Thanh; mother, Stephanie; sister, Emily, 11; brother, Mason, 6.

Hobbies: Reading, writing, tennis, fencing, designing Web sites, creating digital art, origami and playing violin.

Number of dolls she’s made: 12.

How she got started: “I was inspired by watching a lot of costume drama movies and liking to read British literature. You can get a Mary Poppins Barbie from Mattel, but they won’t sell Lizzy Bennet dolls. I was a real Barbie girl when I was younger. I remember getting the Dorothy from ‘The Wizard of Oz’ Barbie once. That was real exciting. I never really grew out of dolls.”

Her first doll: Sherlock Holmes.

The last doll she made: Aragorn from “The Lord of the Rings.”

How she picks what character to make: “I try to pick ones that would appeal to a lot of people but also interesting ones you never see. … Usually I’ve seen a movie that I really like. I get inspired and find all the fabric.”

Other dolls include: Maid Marion from “Robin Hood”; Cinderella; Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet from “Pride & Prejudice”; the Phantom of the Opera and Christine; and Horatio Hornblower.

Average time it takes to make a doll: One to three days.

Tools: Sewing machine, needles, thread, cotton and other quilting fabrics, doll clothing patterns and other supplies from craft stores.

Tradition: “My grandma used to make doll clothes for my mother’s Barbies, and we had some of the old patterns. That’s what I started with. My mother made some, too. I’ve done other things like pillow cases and needlework, as well.”

What her family thinks: “They are really proud of me. They encourage me. … My younger sister is really excited when I make a new one. My grandparents are really proud and supportive, too. They came to see the display at the library, and they really liked it.”

What keeps her going: “One thing I like about this is promoting the books. In particular, books that are less known by popular authors. ‘Villette’ by Charlotte Bronte is just as good a read as ‘Jane Eyre.’ There is just so much great literature out there.”

Library hours: 1-5 p.m. Sundays, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Saturdays.
