Re: “Students reeling after Kent halts field trips,” (TNT, 5/2).
Canceling Kentlake High School’s trip to Canada seems very unfair to the majority of students in the band.
The school district communications director claims President Trump’s messages are “sometimes confusing.” Where is the confusion about obeying laws that have been on the books for a long time? Have they taken students into Canada illegally before? If so, that is a concern.
The question is not whether undocumented students might not be allowed back into the U.S., but how they are going to get into Canada in the first place. Unless you have a passport, birth certificate or enhanced driver’s license, you cannot go there.
Never miss a local story.
Undocumented students cannot prove they are U.S. citizens (because they aren’t), so they should stay home. The rest of the band should be allowed to make the trip with proper documents in hand. No problem!
Don’t deprive the Kentlake band of a great experience just because there are some illegal immigrants in their midst.
