Re: “Homeless sweep at the Jungle shines a light on a failing approach,” (TNT, 4/30).
The photo that accompanied Matt Driscoll’s column was taken after the city had cleaned up the filth and garbage left on the A Street underpass between 25th and 26th streets East. The cleanup happened ten days after the business community sent a flurry of emails to the mayor and other city officials.
Councilman Robert Thoms responded and he’s working to get something done. The Dome business community put pressure on the city; it called an emergency meeting on the homeless issue. Sound Transit said it will send someone down to clean its locks sculpture eventually.
Let’s be leaders and enforce a no-sit and no-lie ordinance like Spokane has. Let’s create a homeless community outside of downtown, provide medical and hygiene facilities and also some dignity. Most people who are homeless don’t want shelters.
Never miss a local story.
Help needs to go to people without homes and also to the business community that provides tax dollars for services.
Thank you, Matt Driscoll for seeing all sides in your column.
