Re: “Zoo celebrates puffin hatchling,” (TNT, 8/10).
The Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium gained a horned puffin in July. News no more hit the ground when the celebratory roars in the wildcat area were surpassed only by the question coursing through the curator’s mind — the chick’s gender.
A gender mystery in the animal world? Should the adult puffins await the forthcoming blood test to determine the creature’s sex? Or should they let it make the choice after a few months afoot?
Will this be case of heteronormativity, or should the 60-plus gender categories be extended to the neo-puffin?
Modern media’s fixation on gender should not exclude the animal world. We await the updates with bated breath.
