I have two properties, both inside Gig Harbor city limits. This year the tax evaluation on my single family home increased by $506, while on my duplex it increased by $447.83.
As taxpayers we received written notification in February with the first half tax payment due April 30. That’s a heavy lift for all Washingtonians. Coming up with approximately $500.in 60 days on a fixed retirement income is tough duty
A better way would be to let taxpayers pay their normal rate from last year’s first half, plus whatever they can raise toward the new increased amounts, with no penalties or interest.
Any remaining unpaid tax obligation could be sent in with the Oct. 31 payment. (A one-time get out of jail free card with no penalties and interest relief).
Giving tax relief in 2019 doesn’t address the double taxation taking place now. (i.e. not getting rid of existing local tax levies while assessing a new state levy of $1.03 per $1,000 assessed value).
I’m really disappointed in the legislators In Olympia, regardless of what party they’re from. This is just not the way to treat people.
