Why hasn't there been a meaningful public process for Pierce County's planned move to the Puget Sound Health site? Sure, I can sign up for emailed updates, and there have been a couple informational meetings. But updates and information do not constitute a process.
I understand that the consolidation of offices will likely save the county some money in the long term, and having many services clustered together might also be convenient. But this is a $90 million investment. For that much, shouldn't we expect to get a lot more for our money than just some efficiencies in services and a shiny new building for our county workers and officials?
It will be disappointing if the county votes at the end of this month, despite the lack of public process, to move forward with the project. A meaningful public process would likely produce a better result for more stakeholders, a result that for decades to come we'll be happy to have produced together.
