Re: "Downtown group pans county's plan for new office" (TNT, 1-15).
The New Tacoma Neighborhood Council (NTNC) does not support the proposed Pierce County administration building.
The NTNC believes public outreach has been limited, with public sessions scheduled a few weeks prior to the final County Council approval vote. In reality, these public sessions appear little more than telling Pierce County taxpayers, "This is what we are doing; it's a done deal, and thanks for coming."
Pierce County needs a new administration building. The present facilities are clearly in ill repair and not cost effective. We simply ask that the entire process be transparent, which means engaging citizens from initial planning stages to completion of the project.
This is a $90 million-plus expenditure on a new building with already existing buildings and property available. This will have a long-lasting impact beyond our lifetime.
Our county deserves a thoughtful, well-researched plan that includes stakeholder representation at the planning table.
