Pierce County is proposing to build a new administration building on property it already owns. Downtown Tacoma supporters want it built downtown. It would be a draw to the downtown businesses, but the cost to build would be higher.
The last place I want to go is downtown Tacoma. Traffic is a pain, parking is a problem and the roads are a mess. This is a county building where county business is done.
While there may not be as many transit options for the new location, the new site will be much easier to get to than a downtown site would be. I question how many people currently use transit to conduct county business.
The No. 1 priority in selecting a site for this building should be what is best for the people who have to do business with the county, not what is best for downtown Tacoma. I am sure that the businesses around the proposed site will be more than happy to accommodate the additional customers they will gain.
Whatever the cost is to build on the proposed site it will be significantly cheaper than building downtown.
