In regard to the florist who refuses sales to same-sex couples, it appears to me that an independent store owner should be able to refuse service to anyone, regardless of the reason.
Many stores had small signs posted near or on their counters or cash resisters that said exactly that: "We reserve the right to refuse service." No reason had to be forthcoming.
I'm not taking sides on the issue of gays, straights or somewhere in between. It's an issue of personal choice. It's another example of Americans losing our individual rights, one by one. It's a sad day, and it will be an even sadder one when we wake up and find we have no personal choices anymore other than conforming to those in power.
So much for small enterprise and businesses.
