We are two women veterans whose combined military service totals over 50 years. Even though we support different political parties, on the issue of open and transparent government process we are in complete agreement.
The proposed Pierce County administration building has lacked transparency and openness to the citizens of Pierce County. The only informational programs were conducted in Tacoma.
The county chose not to enlist a Pierce County citizens advisory committee. Why not? Instead, the county executive chose to keep the entire process internal and closely guarded. Ultimately, the county executive convinced the Pierce County Council to approve this project by a narrow 4-3 vote.
After the vote, Jerry Gibbs, a law-abiding citizen, used his right as a citizen to file a referendum against the ordinance approving the construction of the Pierce County Administration building. He now faces a county lawsuit.
We Pierce County citizens deserve better. The actions of the Pierce County executive and the deputy prosecutor smack of illegal retaliation against a citizen. The Pierce County Council must drop the retaliatory lawsuit against Gibbs.
