At an electronic dance music (EDM) concert at the Tacoma Dome March 21, I had to walk by about six or seven adamant religious protesters waving signs and saying things like, “Premarital sex, drugs, being gay, etc., condemns your soul to hell,” and “If one of you dies tonight, you’ve got no one to blame but yourselves!”
One protester yelled, “You’re going to drown in sin tonight.” I responded, “No, I’m not. I’m going to drown in beautiful music and happiness.”
I’ve only been in the scene for a little over a year now, and I have met the kindest souls through EDM. At raves, I’m surrounded by music and people I love, and I always leave with a smile on my face.
To those who have never experienced the scene and are judging us based on appearances and stereotypes like those protesters were, please take the time to educate yourselves and get to know us. We’re not forcing you to go to shows with us. I am asking that you approach it with an open mind, and if it’s not for you, so be it; just don’t bring your negative vibes to us.
