Something shocking is going on one half mile from downtown Tacoma. ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is arresting people by going into their homes at 5 and 6 in the morning, people who are undocumented workers in many different jobs, sometimes in the U.S. as many as 20 to 25 years.
Most of those arrested have done nothing wrong in their lives, but are put into the Northwest Detention Center and very often quickly deported. Those in the prison are not entitled to public defense, immigration lawyers' fees can be more than the detainees' families can afford, and bail is too high.
Come to the prison any Saturday after 1 p.m. and hear what is happening to these families, who are torn apart by one member being suddenly arrested. This is a blight on our country, since unless we are Native American, we are all immigrants.
