Re: "Marriage equality war is one GOP can't win" (Leonard Pitts Jr. column, 4-9).
The totalitarian mind lives on, always insatiable in its hunger for final solutions. On the subject of marriage equality, Pitts admonishes recalcitrant Republicans to "change your stand, or shut your mouth."
Can there be a sentiment more chilling and abhorrent to an American citizen? That's it? Bend your knee to the seeming majority will, or cower in the corner in silence?
All Americans have the right to fully utilize all the constitutional tools at their disposal to advocate their positions on any policy issue before the country. In fact, this is one of the realities that makes this country exceptional; losers can live to fight another day, and we don't need to throw up barricades in the streets to do it.
Free speech, press, assembly, right to petition the government, constitutional amendments and voting are our weapons always at the ready. Yes, on the gay marriage issue many have changed their minds, and more may yet do so, hopefully as a result of argument and not fear.
Let the debate continue on this and all other contentious issues. Pitts may even be persuaded to change his mind.
